Getting Ready For Opening Day

Some news around the clubhouse:

Andy Pettitte pitched to the SWB Yankees yesterday and felt fine. He threw seventy-seven pitches and said:

“I feel great; everything felt good today,” Pettitte said. “I got a lot
of work in and was able to work on some stuff down the stretch.” (MLB.com)

Right now the gameplan has Pettitte starting Game Five, after he starts the season on the DL.

IPK also pitched to the Yanks AA team, and will be starting Game Four. They wanted him to face some more live hitting before making his first start. IPK by the way had a phenomenal spring, unlike some others I know.

Jeter only wants Bob Sheppard to Introduce him.

The Yankee Captain has had the legendary announcer record his introduction on tape, so that he can continue being introduced by him. Sheppard, who has been with the Yankees for nearly 60 years, has some health issues that are limiting the number of games he will be on hand. Jeter will be the only batter who gets the honorary notion.

3/29 Yankees @ Florida Marlins

Phil Hughes looked good, gearing up for his last start before the regular season. Over five innings he only allowed two runs on three hits. He struck out four. Lefty Billy Traber also got in for two outs before giving up a hit. Rivera and Chamberlain looked good as well, Joba struck out one.

At the plate the Yanks were able to produce four runs, three of them in the top of the ninth inning. The play? An amazing Chad Moeller three run inside the park homer. How about that? The other run came in the fifth off of a pretty well hit Melky homerun.

Yankees Win 4-2

Pitcher Scott Patterson was sent down to AAA after a phenomenal spring. He was not pleased, and was public with his reaction. He felt that he was ready for the Bigs, even though lack of Big League experience was one of the reasons he was sent down. Overall it is just one of those things; there are more players than spots.

BTW:    I was pleased that Billy Traber is the LHP in the bullpen.

2/28 Yankees/Marlins

Well, waiting on the new and improved (well thats what they say, I don’t agree yet) MLBlogs has me a bit behind.

The Yankees faced the Marlins in a losing battle tonight. A Rod came out of the game unscathed though, and was a visiting player entertaining his hometown crowd. He hit two for three with a BB and two RBIs. Included in that lot was a crushed fastball over the left field wall for his fourth homerun of the spring. Jeter and Damon also hit notable doubles, and contributed heavily to the Yanks offensive drive. On the mound Mussina left a little to be desired, allowing five runs on five hits in five innings. Two of those hits were Mike Jacobs homeruns. In the end the Yanks produced two more hits than the Marlins, but were unable to turn them into more runs and lost the game 5-3.

The two teams matchup again tomorrow for the Yankees last game of Spring Training. Phil Hughes will make the start.

3/28 Yankees @ Marlins

Here is the starting lineup for tonights game, minus the bullpen.

YANKEES
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreau RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Posada C
Cano 2B
Duncan DH
Cabrera CF

Pitching
Mussina

3/28 Yankees @ Marlins

The Yankees have gone on the road and are headed down to Miami to match up with the Marlins. Mike Mussina will be on the mound as the starting pitcher.

I’ll post the lineup as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Kei Igawa No, Nick Green Yes!

Well today’s game started the exact way that I imagened. By the time I had posted up the Yanks lineup I was also required to note that Igawa was getting hit hard. He allowed three hits and two runs in the first inning, all to my knowledge on pitches up in the zone. I know that Igawa doesn’t think he’s overpowering (he does know that right?) but even a guy throwing 102 mph wouldn’t float every pitch up there.

Jeter hit his first homerun of the spring in the bottom of the first. 2-1.

In the second inning the Pirates drove in two more.

Igawa pitched into the third inning, and gave up four runs on five hits. I would go back into ranting about this guy but for the money he cost it’s too depressing.

Karstens relieves Igawa but looks to have pulled a groin or leg muscle after three batters. For a guy really trying to cement a position in the pen, this isn’t what he could have hoped for. Scott Patterson came in next, and as usual looked great. He pitched 1 1/3 innings with no runs allowed.

The game stays offensively stagnant until the ninth when Pittsburgh scores one run.

Who do you think hits one out of the park for the Pinstripes in the bottom of the ninth???

Nick

Oh Yes! The Mighty NICK GREENE! This guy is a trip.

BTW: Greene hasn’t been “officially” sent down yet, but Betimit secured his own personal spot on the bench so…. we’ll see what happens.

In the end the Yanks lose 5-2

The Bombers leave for Miami to play two more before their first regular season game on March 31st.

For Game One they host the Jays at 1:05 p.m. in the Bronx.

3/27 Yankees/Pirates

Welcome from George M. Steinbrenner Field. The pregame dedication was nice, and the Bomber’s are ready for the last spring game in Tampa this year. The Yankees play their last two down in Miami.

Kei Igawa is making today’s start (oh-no)

Here is the starting lineup minus the bullpen:

YANKEES
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Duncan RF
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Matsui LF
Ensberg 1B
Betemit 2B
Cabrera CF

Pitching
Igawa

I’m going to watch the game, but would like to note that Igawa just gave up a hit to the first batter he faced. Why? Pitch up in the zone. No kidding…

Igawa has proceeded to give up two runs and three hits, all from pitches up in the zone. What is with this guy?

BTW: Andy Pettitte played catch today and will be working in the bullpen tomorrow. He is expected to start Game Four against the Rays.
